Helping male victims of domestic violence

Many people do not believe that men can be victims of domestic abuse. It can be very difficult for a man to come forward and admit that he is a victim of domestic abuse. In 2005 the National Crime Council found that 26% of men suffer domestic abuse but only 1 in 20 men reported this abuse to the Gardai.

Amen was founded over 12 years ago and since then has worked tirelessly to provide a confidential helpline, information and a support service for male victims of domestic abuse and their children.

With the funding received from the HSE and CSVC Amen employs an office manager, two full time support workers, a court accompanier and a clerical officer.

The organisation campaigns for greater recognition and support services for male victims from political and statutory bodies and for the inclusion of men, men's groups and men's experiences in the formulation of relevant social policy and legislation.

Domestic violence is an issue that hurts every member of a family.

Amen's services include:

  • A confidential helpline and a support service for male victims of domestic abuse.
  • Information on legal and other remedies available to abused men.
  • Support group meetings.
  • Court accompaniment.

If a male victim seeks help, society should offer the same protection and help to him and his children as is given to female victims. Women should be judged by the same standards as men, and women who are violent should be held legally responsible for their actions.

''Amen are the first people I have felt listened and helped me and I hope to God that you can give me the benefit of the doubt. I truly know how odd and strange all this is but I am helpless and I am no longer in control of my life.'' John, Dublin

''I can't say it in words how grateful I am, for your listening and understanding ear. It's the first time I've felt there is someone who listens and understands me. All I want and have ever wanted is to have my three children grow up with love and respect. To be able to share with them the love and pride I have for them.'' Anthony, South Dublin
