Abstract
This
study explores the issue of Domestic Violence from the perspective
of the male victim. Analysis of data will show that the incidence
of Domestic Violence against men is higher than previously suggested;
that Irish Law as it is written is gender neutral; but interpretation
of that Law can be gender biased; that there is a degree of 'Selective
inattention' around the issue by the media; and that there is
a stereotypical societal view of a man as a victim that serves to
deny the existence of the problem. Recommendations include guidelines
for more equitable methods of dealing with the problem.
Violence against women and children is a tragic and appalling fact. Our choice of topic in no way intends to negate or ignore this. Our intention is to highlight the group who in the broader context of domestic violence are presently being neglected.
